We recently had the privilege of providing full production including lighting, audio, and projections, for the Western Association of Ballet Schools (WABS). We collaborated with the WABS team to create an immersive show where each performance seamlessly transitioned into the next, taking the audience on journey through an art gallery both through dance and through projections.
Our partnership with the WABS team spanned two weekends. The first was dedicated to rigging, programming, designing, and a full dress rehearsal. This phase was crucial for fine-tuning every element and ensuring that the vision of each performance was brought to life. After the rehearsal, we de-rigged our equipment, only to return the following weekend for the main event. Curtains up demanded precision; we made final touches to the design before the afternoon performance commenced.
The lighting configuration was a blend of spots, washes, uplighting, and a star cloth. Spots were strategically situated on various bars throughout the rig, with some suspended lower to introduce different heights and depths to the design. This layering created a dynamic and textured visual experience blending the dance floor with the overhead lighting elements.
We incorporated various gobo patterns, aligning each design with the theme of the corresponding performance. Given that the overall theme was Artwork, with each school basing their performance around a specific piece of art, the gobos played a pivotal role in enhancing the storytelling. Our lighting not only illuminated the dancers but also acted as a visual extension of the art pieces they represented.
The main element taking the audience on the visual journey with the performances was the gallery projections, we installed a large screen and projector, suspended within the lighting rig. This setup allowed us to project visuals that complemented each performance, as well as transitional visuals that enhanced the storyline between acts. The projections filled the space, working in harmony with the lighting design to create a cohesive and fluid design.
Sound is an integral part of any performance, and our audio rig was designed to ensure even distribution throughout the theatre. We implemented a multipoint setup with strategically positioned speakers covering both the lower seating and the circles. This approach enveloped the audience in sound regardless of where they were sitting. We also provided monitors positioned along each side of the stage providing coverage for the performers across the entire dance floor.
Lighting, projections and audio all provide elements to capture the audience and immerse them in the performance on stage, however we like to take it one step further and for the finale of each show we incorporated pyros to add an extra “wow” element to the design. Using confetti bombs we created an exciting end to each show leaving the performers and the audience on a high.
Working with the WABS team was a pleasure as always.
