We recently had the pleasure of providing full technical production for A Chance to Dance, a vibrant dance showcase held at the Pavilion Theatre in Bournemouth. This biannual event brings together talented performers from various schools, in both summer and, for the first time this year, winter performances.
Designing for the inaugural winter show was a great opportunity for the team to design a new rig with different elements to enhance the impact of each performance. We created a multi-height lighting rig that incorporated a diverse array of fixtures, including spots, washes, and uplighting. The spots and washes highlighted performers and facilitated smooth mood transitions, gobo projections, dynamic chase movements and patterns between pieces. Uplighting provided depth and dimension, elevating the overall aesthetic. Our goal was to craft a versatile setup that could adapt to the unique themes and costume designs of each school’s performance. Each act required a distinct atmosphere, so we collaborated closely with the schools to select colours and patterns that complemented their choreography and costumes.
The most challenging aspect to this event was the tight timeline. With less than 12 hours to rig, programme, design, rehearse, and be ready for curtains up at 7pm, efficiency was paramount. Our team coordinated seamlessly to ensure rapid installation of the rig without compromising on quality. We conducted a full dress rehearsal to fine-tune cues and effects, ultimately delivering a flawless production service that met the high standards of the event.
Participating in A Chance to Dance is always a highlight for us, and this year’s winter show was no exception.
